Na letošní druhé oficiální testy Světové série F Renault 3.5 nebude jezdec týmu ISR Filip Salaquarda rád vzpomínat. V rychlosti 240 km/h mu přestaly fungovat brzdy na zadních kolech. Stalo se tak na konci dlouhé rovinky. Následoval průjezd únikovou zónou a pak náraz do zdi.
Tým teď čeká oprava Filipovy formule a pak cesta do španělského Motorlandu Aragon na poslední testy před ostrým startem Světové serie F Renault 3.5.
Filip Salaquarda stepped forward with his right foot at the Masaryk Circuit in
Naturally, Filip Salaquarda was absolutely satisfied: “We had fared excellently already in the morning when I had been the fastest for a long time. But unlike us, most rivals changed to new tyres towards the end of the practice, which made them faster. We didn’t fit the cars with new tyres before this afternoon. We tried various settings, and I dare say we chose an ideal one. And we also found a set-up for the Saturday race, which will be a particularly tricky business on the Masaryk Circuit. This setting features a minimum aero package.
Filip’s father and team principal rolled into one, Igor Salaquarda, agreed with his son’s words: “
By way of conclusion, we remind you that both the Saturday and Sunday races begin at 1 p.m. and are broadcast live on Eurosport.
Filip Salaquarda and his ISR Racing team face one of watershed moments in the season. They will take part in the next round of the World Series by Renault on the Masaryk Circuit in Brno over the weekend of 5–6 June.
At the previous event in Monte Carlo, Salaquarda finally got rid of the hateful zero to his credit. “I take it as a stepping stone and the first solid result I’ve achieved this year so far. Of course, I want to continue this achievement”, said the Czech driver. Home environment seems to be a substantial advantage. “It's true that we tested in Brno during the springtime, but our equipment played up a good deal in such a way that we weren’t able to do all the job we had purposed to. Moreover, any driver on this performance level who doesn’t know Brno will master the circuit during twenty to thirty laps in practice”, Filip explained. Nevertheless, he added in another moment that he is naturally very pleased to be able to present himself in the flesh before his numerous fans. He considers the climb before the approach to the stadium as well as the last corner before the finishing straight to be the key sections of the track. And what finish would he accept? “Of course, on the rostrum. At worst, I’d like to finish in the top six along with my team-mate, Esteban Guerrieri!”
Both the Saturday and Sunday 3.5-litre F Renault races begin at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Eurosport.
Filip Salaquarda opened his account winning his first three points in this year’s World Series by Renault 3.5. He finished a strong eighth in the only race in Monte Carlo, Monaco where the event was held as part of the Formula One Grand Prix weekend.
Even so, the Prague-based driver, defending the colours of the ISR Racing team, was not completely satisfied: “Qualifying was not running the way I imagined it. I always ruined the middle sector a bit on the laps when I had a clear road up ahead.” All the same, Salaquarda took a promising seventh on the starting grid. His new team-mate, Alexander Rossi of the USA, was even two places better though he had a minor accident at Massanet.
The third round of this year’s edition of the World Series by Renault 3.5 will lead its participants to one of the world’s most exclusive tracks: the street circuit in Monte Carlo. The teams heading for the Riviera or Côte d’Azur include the Czech ISR Racing team and its driver Filip Salaquarda.
The race held in the Principality of Monaco as part of the Formula One Grand Prix support programme is characterized by its own particularities. The point is not just that there is only one run on the programme and that the whole time schedule looks different. In particular, it is a matter of its character: “It is commonly known that passing is almost impossible in Monte Carlo. It is equally certain that qualifying plays an absolutely crucial role here. If you screw it up, basically you have no chance whatsoever of a solid finish. Moreover, even the slightest excess of acceptable level of risk usually results in an immediate end. The guard rail is very close and there are no conventional run-off areas here”, says Filip Salaquarda. By contrast with most of his rivals, he should benefit from knowing the twisty Monégasque circuit very well through his own experience acquired in his previous races. On the other hand, he admits that the bends in Monte Carlo are not among his favourite ones.
There is a change as regards the ISR Racing team’s number two driver. The Spa race winner, Argentinian Esteban Guerrieri, who had a contract only for two race weekends, has been replaced by another outstanding driver, Alexander Rossi. Thus, the American has returned to a familiar environment because he already raced for the ISR team in the International Formula Master last season.
The Monte Carlo race begins on Sunday, 16th May at 11 a.m. and will be broadcast live on Eurosport 1.
“It was a weekend to remember”, says ISR Racing team principal Igor Salaquarda analyzing the second round of the World Series by Renault 3.5 at Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium with the benefit of hindsight. No surprise about that. It's not often that a team finds itself dead broke one day, and climbs the top step on the podium the next.
Saturday was really a failure for the two ISR drivers, Filip Salaquarda and Esteban Guerrieri of Argentina. Filip could not run any fast lap during qualifying because the session was constantly suspended with red flags. Eventually, he had to content himself with his position at the tail end of the starting grid. Guerrieri fared even worse fighting against time. He locked his front wheels at the least convenient place, at the steep downhill approach to the Rivage passage. “We’d had a bit trouble with brake warming since Friday. In a bid to get rid of this problem, Esteban adjusted braking effect distribution to both axles. But this was not a lucky decision. Besides, he was too close to the dirty edge of the track at the crucial moment so he was unable to avert an accident”, explains Igor Salaquarda. Although the car did not seem to be heavily damaged at first sight, a detailed check made by his mechanics revealed that the steering gear was damaged. Unfortunately, there was not enough time to repair the car by the race start. Neither could Filip Salaquarda get a break from bad luck. A hose leading from gearbox to cooler burst on his car during the war-up lap. “Such a petty connecting piece failed. Nothing was apparent while I was driving. But as soon as I stopped on the starting grid, oil leaking onto the exhaust pipe burst into flames. Luckily, the fire was quickly extinguished and so it didn’t damage the engine”, Filip Salaquarda recalls the dramatic moments.
The Sunday qualifying was marked by Filip’s continued suffering. There was no way for him to hit a relatively light-traffic lap and, above all, not under yellow flags. Esteban was a tad luckier even though his 12th grid position did not promise miracles.
However, it was an unpredictable weather typical of the Ardennes that came into play. As the drivers were on the way to the grid, it began to drizzle. After a hurried consultation and especially a fleeting glance at the overcast sky, a decision was made to change to wet tyres. This action was subsequently taken by most rivals, but they forgot to follow the time…
During the warm-up lap, a torrential rain came down even turning into a hailstorm for a while. This is why the start was logically postponed. However, the ISR mechanics did not laze about during this idle period: “We finished adjusting the car to a wet race. This is not easy even under normal conditions while now the boys had to work in torrential conditions. Yet, they handled their task perfectly”, says Igor Salaquarda.
In the first phase, Guerrieri was lying between the first and second dozens while Salaquarda was slowly moving up: “I overtook Kunimoto, but it was a great adventure. The cars running ahead of me raised clouds of water fog, which meant that I had to run virtually without seeing anything every now and then. As I’d failed to make it to the finish three times before, I wanted to nurse it home at all costs this time. Eventually, I did it.” It’s a shame there was a misunderstanding during Salaquarda’s pitstop when Guerrieri’s tyres had been prepared for Filip (each driver has his own set, and these sets cannot be interchanged even within the team). Waiting for the proper tyres, the Czech driver dropped from twelfth to the final fifteenth position.
However, the pitstops had a positive effect on the ISR team as well: “We kept an eye on our rivals in order to know when they would change their tyres. All of them did it very early. That’s why we kept both of our drivers on the track as long as possible. Having a clear road ahead, Esteban recorded one fastest lap after another”, says Igor Salaquarda revealing the secret of their sensational triumph. And there was one more factor playing into the hands of the team based at Čestlice near Prague. In a total of ten (!) cases during the above-mentioned tyre changing before the start, the mechanics were in contravention of clause prohibiting any work on the cars later than three minutes before the cars leave for the warm-up lap. The drivers involved, most of which had taken up the top positions on the grid, had to take their drive through penalties. To his amazement, Guerrieri suddenly appeared in the lead. He stayed in the leading position without difficulty until the chequered flag fell. “It was a very difficult race. You had to concentrate as much as possible all the time. As soon as I learned that ten cars had to drive through the pitlane as punishment, I pushed as hard as I could. As I saw the pit board showing P1, I was surprised, but happy. It’s an excellent result for ISR. We’re a new team, and we’ve really deserved this victory”, the winner said immediately after the awards ceremony.
Filip Salaquarda will not remember this year’s event of the World Series by Renault 3.5 at the Spa-Francorchamps track in Belgium kindly. Neither did the Sunday race turn out the way he had imagined it. He had to settle for fifteenth place.
One of the causes of his failure was a fumbled morning qualifying session: “It was the same problem as yesterday. I couldn’t run a fast lap because qualifying was stopped time after time. As I seemed to be in the clear, there were yellow flags in another sector again.”
The rain was falling heavily all day long in the Ardennes Mountains and the race start was delayed due to a downpour together with a momentary hailstorm. In the waterflow splashing from the wheels of the cars running ahead of him, Filip, starting from 22nd, could virtually see nothing: “Every racing driver knows those moments when he must tough it out and fight even though his chance of success is very little. This is what happened to me right here. It was one of the most difficult races in my career. My car was oversteering. I ran wide into the sandtrap twice and my pitstop was not absolutely clean either”, Filip said sadly.
Nevertheless, there was a huge delight in Filip’s ISR Racing pit as Salaquarda’s team-mate Esteban Guerrieri made sure of a tremendous sensation winning the race after his excellent and tactical performance as well as a well-planned strategy!
